SUMMARY:ONLINE Vertical Farming Conference
DESCRIPTION:The continually-growing world populations\, the global trend to urbanisation\, climate change and pressure on natural resources are key drivers for policies on global food security. Vertical farming is an innovative methodology for vertical cultivation of agricultural products in a small footprint\, which can also realize true zero-mile city food supply. \nVertical farms can be built in new or existing buildings and provide significant benefits in environmental sustainability and human health\, minimizing the need for water and nutrients\, and eliminating pesticides and fungicides\, which are no longer needed. Vertical farming and urban agriculture\, if designed and implemented appropriately\, could offer sustainable and innovative solutions for improving food security in a small footprint. \nFocus topics of the conference are: \n\nAvailable technologies – LED lighting\, sensors\, AI\nPlant condition issues like: CO2\, Nutrients\, Irrigation\, Climate\, Lighting\nFood safety / HACCP\nRobotics\nImproved resource-use efficiency\nSustainability issues\nSmart Cities / Architecture / Urban Design\nFrom traditional farmer to vertical farmer

SUMMARY:Wageningen University & Research and Delphy - Vertical Farm Facilities Opening
DESCRIPTION:Vertical Farming – ‘Beyond the Hype’\nOpening of the Vertical Farm facilities built by Wageningen University & Research and Delphy in combination with the Vertical Farming Conference\nThere are great opportunities for Vertical Farming as part of the global food system of the future. The potential yields are high\, the quality can be optimally controlled\, and many resources are used more sustainably than in more traditional types of agriculture and horticulture. Above all\, Vertical Farms can be built anywhere: all over the world and close to the consumer\, which translates into fewer food miles and less food waste. However\, there are still some challenges facing this still relatively new agricultural practice. Only little scientific research has been carried out at this point in time that captures the actual value of Vertical Farming in hard figures. This is partly because nothing has been standardised yet: no two Vertical Farms are the same. Therefore\, there are still numerous opportunities for optimisation. \nWageningen University & Research\, BU Horticulture & Flower Bulbs and Delphy Improvement Centre\, both established at the Horti Science Park in Bleiswijk\, recently finished building their Vertical Farm facilities. Research projects are currently in full swing here. They are primarily carried out as part of the ‘Vertical Farming Field Lab’\, a project co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the Province of Zuid-Holland. \nThe official opening of WUR and Delphy’s Vertical Farm facilities will be held on Friday 1 October as part of the ‘Horti Science Park Event Weeks’. At the opening ceremony\, which will take place that morning on Violierenweg 1-3 in Bleiswijk\, the importance of Vertical Farming for the region – and the entire world – and the opportunities offered by the facilities led by WUR and Delphy will be discussed. The first research results will also be announced. Later on that day\, the international ‘Vertical Farming Conference’ will be held. During this afternoon symposium\, experts will discuss various aspects of Vertical Farming\, examining such topics as technology\, sustainability and cultivation climate. Some of the speakers will be presenting their contribution to the conference at the Horti Science Park. \nThe morning and afternoon programmes can be attended both in person (exclusively for invitees and subject to registration) and online. Please note that the number of seats at the science park is very limited. This is partly on account of restrictions imposed due to the pandemic. You can find the procedure for registration and participation here. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Global Food Security & Sustainability Summit 2021
DESCRIPTION:The Global food system is at a critical stage and made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic. As many as 265 million people are threatened by famine\, up 50% from last year. 700 million suffer from chronic hunger and 2 billion more from malnutrition\, with obesity and associated diet-related diseases increasing in all regions. During the height of the pandemic with lockdowns\, we have witnessed the collapse of the global food system with reports of food producers resorting to dumping their produce. The food crisis faced during the pandemic is a wake-up call for both developed and developing countries of the looming crisis facing the world when the next major crisis hits us\, be it climate change\, pandemics etc. \nAlthough the world has progressed significantly in terms of technological advancements in food production\, food is not distributed in an equitable manner to regions\, countries\, households and individuals. Government policies\, availability of investments and technological know-how including access to food supplies are key issues to meet the urgent food needs of the world’s growing population. New and innovative farming technologies such as high-tech agriculture and aquaculture methods that produce more yields inland and urban conditions offer hope for the future. \nThe Global Food Security & Sustainability Virtual Summit 2021 held on 17 September 2021\, would be one of the most important events ever held to address the critical issues of food security from the local to global level\, and from an interdisciplinary and systemic food systems perspective. The summit will invite multi-stakeholders from governmental organisations\, private sector businesses and NGOs to address the current disruptions and possible solutions on the world food supply chain. Discussions will also include issues surrounding sustainability issues and how societies and businesses can design more sustainable solutions in their entire food chain to minimize impact to the environment and reduce food waste.
